Peter A. Calabresi, MD is an Professor of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Director of the Johns Hopkins Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center. Dr. Calabresi is also Co-Director of the Division of Neuroimmunology. Dr. Calabresi earned his undergraduate degree from Yale College and medical degree from Brown University. He then completed residency training at Strong Memorial Hospital, and completed a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, Neuroimmunology Branch.
He serves on the clinical care and research programs committees of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and on the board of trustees of the Society’s Maryland Chapter. As director of the MS Center at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Calabresi is the principal investigator on several clinical trials and also oversees translational laboratory research projects. Dr. Calabresi has designed and directed several clinical trials investigating combination drug therapies in MS and is on the advisory board for three national multi-center clinical trials.
His specific laboratory research interest lies in understanding the mechanisms of T lymphocyte differentiation into effector memory T cells. He has published numerous articles on the adhesion molecules and chemokine receptors responsible for T cell homing to the brain in MS. He is also the recipient of a five-year Tissue Repair grant from the National MS Society to study mechanisms of neurodegeneration and strategies for neuroprotection in MS.
